The feet have an illustrious and intriguing history. People often view their feet as an alien part of their anatomy, seldom considering they are the foundation/platform part of our body while standing. In bygone times, feet were held in high regard. Leonardo da Vinci called the foot ‘a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art’. Considering the size of the feet in relation to the body they support, the humble feet are nothing short of remarkable. The average American takes 6,000 to 8000 steps a day, logging about 115,000 miles in a lifetime. Although we use our feet mostly for walking, they also support or carry our body when we are standing, running, climbing, descending or jumping. The feet are in almost constant use. We often take them for granted and pay little attention to their needs. That is we ignore our feet until they give us trouble. The hands reach out to touch the world around us, sensing our environment and shaping it to our needs. Hands engage in many activities during the day. Communication is a primary activity of the hands. Waving to a friend, touching someone, or shaking hands links us to the world outside. Further communication is possible through the hand’s manipulation of instruments of writing. Our written communication has progressed from clay tablet to paper pad to the electronic screen. The hand has handled it all. Whether you choose Hand or Foot Reflexology, take the time to be nice to a part of the body that does so much for you. |
